The Magic Flute tells the story of an initiatory journey, filled with universal moral symbols and meanings. Mozart completed this Singspiel a few months before his death, and since its triumphant premiere on September 30, 1791, The Magic Flute has remained a cornerstone in the history of Western music.

Set in ancient Egypt, the story follows Prince Tamino, who is determined to overcome any obstacle to rescue Pamina, held captive by Sarastro. Joining him in this adventure is the bird-catcher Papageno and two magical instruments—a flute and a music box—given as charms by the Ladies of the Queen of the Night. An engaging series of surprises, trials, and unusual characters mark the journey of Tamino and Papageno. Driven by love and a quest for knowledge, they overcome the darkness of prejudice and reach the light of conscious maturity. The sublime love of Tamino and Pamina, and the more earthly love of Papageno and Papagena, are both crowned with happy endings, enriched by a journey of growth. This reflects an Enlightenment vision of equality and the universality of human nature and emotions.

LIVE FROM

TEATRO COMUNALE, FERRARA

Recently dedicated to the great conductor Claudio Abbado, the history of the Teatro Comunale di Ferrara dates back to 1790 under the direction of the architect Giuseppe Campana. Direction of the theatre’s construction then passed to the architect Antonio Foschini and then to Cosimo Morelli. The theatre was completed in 1797 and despite the assortment of architects, remains very unified in style, fitting well into the surrounding urban fabric among the pre-existing architecture like the Castello and the Church of San Carlo. The front of the building is a key component of the city’s life.
