NEW PRODUCTION
New opera commissioned and co-produced by Fondazione Teatro Comunale di Modena, Landestheater Linz, and Serbian National Theatre
Co-financed by the European Union’s “Creative Europe” Program
CrossOpera is an opera dedicated to the theme of transcultural integration, created in collaboration with the Landestheater Linz (Austria) and the Serbian National Theatre in Novi Sad (Serbia). The opera features 12 musicians and 6 young singers from the three cities. It is divided into three episodes, each entrusted to a composer proposed by the respective theaters: the Italian Luigi Cinque, the German Valentin Ruckebier, and the Serbian Jasmina Mitrusic. Each act will be in the original language (Italian, German, and Serbian) with surtitles in the language of the country of performance.
The relationship with the European agency was supported by the valuable collaboration of the European Policies and International Relations Office of the Municipality of Modena. The project developed alongside the desire to create an opera dedicated to the various aspects of cultural integration related to the migratory flows that have increasingly affected Europe in recent decades. Hence, the project of this “CrossOpera,” a musical theater work where opera and crossover musical influences merge. The three composers were asked to develop a short one-act piece of thirty minutes on the theme of the opera, Otherness, fear and discovery, that is, the fear of the ‘other’ and the discovery of something new.
The project’s partnership, with two internationally renowned institutions, also has the merit of developing the relationship with two cities historically twinned with the Municipality of Modena: Linz and Novi Sad.

MUNICIPAL THEATER OF MODENA
The Municipal Theater of Modena was inaugurated in 1841 under the name Theater of the Illustrious Community. Throughout its history, it has preserved its beauty intact and has not undergone any significant structural transformation. As it stands today, the Theater, is the result of a thorough historical-conservative restoration that restored it to its original splendor and adjusted to all modern safety standards.
