After the five-act edition of the opera that Giuseppe Verdi approved for performance in Modena in 1886 and which the Teatro Comunale produced in 2012, Don Carlo returns for a new performance of the four-act edition, this time in concert form and viewable only on video due to restrictions imposed by the health emergency. The title, which will be followed worldwide as part of the regional OperaStreaming project, brings to the Modena stage an exceptional cast directed by Jordi Bernàcer, leading the Emilia-Romagna Arturo Toscanini Orchestra and the Modena Lyric Choir. Philip II is Michele Pertusi, acclaimed as one of the greatest singers on the world opera scene, recently applauded in Marin Faliero at the Donizetti Festival in Bergamo, in Don Carlos at the Vienna State Opera and in Verdi’s Requiem Mass with the Orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala conducted by Riccardo Chailly. Luca Salsi (Rodrigo), one of the world’s most famous baritones, has been the protagonist of two season openings at the Teatro alla Scala: in 2017 in Andrea Chénier and in 2019 in Tosca. In the 2018/19 season, he debuted as Iago in Otello with the Berlin Philharmonic, performed Macbeth under the direction of Riccardo Muti, Germont in La traviata at the Paris Opera and the Metropolitan in New York, and Simon Boccanegra at the Salzburg Festival. Internationally renowned soprano Anna Pirozzi has performed in Andrea Chénier at the San Francisco Opera, in the role of Lady Macbeth in Madrid alongside Plácido Domingo and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, in I due Foscari at the Teatro alla Scala and in Il Trovatore at the Royal Opera House in London. The title role will be entrusted to Andrea Carè, a former student in Modena of Raina Kabaivanska and Luciano Pavarotti and today one of the most established Italian tenors of the new generation. In 2018/19 he performed in Carmen at the Royal Opera House in London and at the Bolshoi in Moscow and debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in Madama Butterfly. The role of Princess of Eboli will be entrusted to Judit Kutasi, a Romanian mezzo-soprano heard at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Zurich Opera and the Berlin Opera.
