LIVE OPERA STREAMING FROM THE THEATERS OF EMILIA-ROMAGNA

THE LAND OF MELODRAMA

The tradition of melodrama in the Emilia-Romagna Region, with its protagonists and the popular passion passed down through the centuries, constitutes a heritage of international interest. The land of Giuseppe Verdi and performers who have made history in this musical genre, such as Carlo Bergonzi, Luciano Pavarotti, Leo Nucci, and Mirella Freni, the Emilia-Romagna Region today enjoys one of the most productive musical activities in the operatic field thanks to the highest presence of historic theaters in the national territory. The theaters of Emilia-Romagna produce prestigious opera performances every year thanks not only to the quality of the artists but also to the preservation of an ancient and original craft and technique in the construction of Italian-style theater productions.

LIVE PERFORMANCES

OperaStreaming offers a seasonal program of live video broadcasts produced by the main institutions dedicated to the production of operas in Emilia-Romagna (the Bologna Symphony Opera Foundation, the Traditional Theaters of Piacenza, Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Ferrara, and Ravenna, the Amintore Galli Theater of Rimini) in collaboration with EDUNOVA-University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. The project, started in 2019, aims to identify and promote, through a global communication tool, the Emilia-Romagna Region as a territory of lyrical tradition and operatic production of absolute international prestige. The project’s purpose is also to provide, even within the same regional territory, a service aimed at disadvantaged audiences in accessing theater activities.

FROM TEATRONET TO OPERA STREAMING

OperaStreaming is a continuation of TeatroNet, the initiative launched by the Department of Culture of the Emilia-Romagna Region in 2012, aimed at streaming musical performances from the theaters and institutions of the territory, also thanks to the fiber optic network implemented by Lepida S.p.A.

Following the TeatroNet experience, numerous theaters have continued and developed the channel of digital broadcasts in subsequent years, following a trend that is becoming a fundamental component of the international opera scene, thanks to cutting-edge technology.

Among these, the Teatro Comunale di Modena has found in video communication an indispensable opportunity for the development of live performances and has established, starting in 2013, a collaborative relationship with the EDUNOVA e-learning Center, a leading entity in the field of video production. The performances, recorded live in full HD, have been regularly broadcast and viewed openly on the YouTube platform by tens of thousands of spectators from all over the world.
