Massenet’s Werther is presented in a new, extensive co-production between Opera Lombardia and the theaters of Modena, Reggio Emilia, Ferrara, and Pisa. The title role is entrusted to Francesco Demuro, an internationally renowned tenor who has performed at major theaters, from the Metropolitan in New York to the Opéra in Paris. The role of Charlotte is sung by Veronica Simeoni, a mezzo-soprano trained by Raina Kabaivanska and in demand worldwide, from La Scala in Milan to Covent Garden in London, from the Metropolitan in New York to La Fenice in Venice.

Inspired by Goethe’s novel The Sorrows of Young Werther, the opera narrates the tragic love story between the protagonist and Charlotte.
Due to a promise made to her mother on her deathbed, the young woman decides to renounce Werther in favor of Albert. The protagonist’s despair leads him to suicide, but not before seeing his beloved one last time and receiving the long-desired kiss from her.

MUNICIPAL THEATER OF MODENA

The Municipal Theater of Modena was inaugurated in 1841 under the name Theater of the Illustrious Community. Throughout its history, it has preserved its beauty intact and has not undergone any significant structural transformation. As it stands today, the Theater, is the result of a thorough historical-conservative restoration that restored it to its original splendor and adjusted to all modern safety standards.
