Henry Purcell is one of the greatest composers of the English tradition. He is the author of both theatrical and instrumental scores. Dido and Aeneas, absent in Modena since the 1985/86 season, is a masterpiece written in 1689 in a chamber dimension before becoming one of the most famous works of the ancient repertoire.

The story is taken from Book IV of Virgil’s Aeneid, whose mythological elements intertwine with the magical and fairy-tale aspects of the English tradition. The opera tells of the stay of the Trojan hero welcomed in Carthage by Queen Dido. However, their love story is opposed by dark forces, which see Aeneas forced to leave for Italy and Dido abandoned to despair.

MUNICIPAL THEATER OF MODENA

The Municipal Theater of Modena was inaugurated in 1841 under the name Theater of the Illustrious Community. Throughout its history, it has preserved its beauty intact and has not undergone any significant structural transformation. As it stands today, the Theater, is the result of a thorough historical-conservative restoration that restored it to its original splendor and adjusted to all modern safety standards.
